1st Graders Compare Crickets to Mealworms!

Our mealworms are continuing to grow!  They have molted (or shed) their skin several times now and are getting so big!  We weren't 100% sure if crickets were insects or not, but after observing them and noticing their 6 legs, 3 body parts and antennae we decided they were!

We then looked closely at the crickets and compared how they were the same and how they were different from our mealworms!

The cricket has longer antennae than the mealworm.

The cricket has bigger legs than the mealworm.

The crickets jump and the mealworms walk.

They both lines on their bodies.

They don't eat the same food.

The "tails" on the crickets tell us if it is a male or female.
The mealworm doesn't have a tail.

The crickets walk around in their habitat a lot.

The mealworm is long and skinny, the cricket is fatter.

I can see the cricket's eyes, but it's hard to see the mealworms eyes.

Pre-K and the Critters!

Pre-K has been looking at the science critters!  They have been learning how to handle live creatures gently and making observations about how the critters move, feel and look! Pre-k has also been observing tree parts and apples - wonderful autumn objects!

The walking stick is so gentle.

Using our sense of touch with play dough.

The walking sticks only move forward.

They are so small.

The horseshoe crab's tail is spiky.

We wondered what type of bone I found on the beach.

This walking stick liked the table!

The snails are finally waking up!

Slicing the play dough.

This snail is still sleeping.

So many parts of the tree!

I see the eyes!

It's slimy.

When you blow on a snail, sometimes it wakes up!

The Roly Polies!

It's hard to get them to climb on the stick!

Where is it?

#Cardboardchallenge

What a fun Saturday morning!  PS 58 participated in the Global Cardboard Challenge this year.  The day of play commemorates the flashmob that visited Caine's Arcade 5 years ago!  Children and their families arrived to a gym filled with hundreds of cardboard boxes, tape, scissors, markers and cardboard saws. Everyone got right to work designing and building the creations they imagined!

Let the building begin!

The start of a house.

A robot with eyes that move up and down.

A space ship!

A movie camera to record it all!

A later version of the robot with moving eyes!

A catapult.

Families creating together!
