And the Chicks are Off!

Well, it had to happen at some point!  Our chicks have gone with a PS58 family to their new home in upstate New York!  We hope to get pictures of them as they continue to grow!

We had so much fun watching them walk around and peck at things!

They loved to peck at the designs!

Huddling in the heat lamp.

So many hands patiently waiting!

Such calm hands....with tasty food!

Somebody is feeling very bold!  In fact, the black chick ended up
flying onto the edge of the box!  I think it's time for a bigger space!

This little chick has so many feathers on it's wings!

They have such long legs now!

Getting in the car for the trip north!

2nd Graders and Ramps!

Over the past few weeks 2nd grade has been investigating the way wheels and cups roll.  There are different challenges for each investigation.  One unintended challenge is to keep the ramp from falling apart!
Cups can't roll straight because the top is bigger than the bottom.

To make the cup roll straight, you have to tape the same
sized cup together.  Partner work!

What happens when you tape a penny to the rolling cup?

Almost figured it out!

Yes!  Parked the car!

A wobbly roller!

Around the corner!

The Chicks are Growing!

The chicks are a week old now!  Our final number of hatched chicks is 19!  The last little guy needed some help getting out of its shell, but.....it made it!

They are cute little chicks!  They like to huddle together and peck at things. Just today I noticed they were starting to scratch (looking for potential food).
You can see the chick's ear!

Oh they love to huddle!

It's hard work being a chick!

After they drink the water, they lift their
head up to swallow!

Feathers are starting to come in on the wings - day 4.

Checking out the classroom.

You can see more feathers on the wings!

The end of a long day!

1st Graders Report the Weather!

We have begun our final unit of the year - weather!   What better way to start learning about weather than to read a thermometer!  People use thermometers to discover what the temperature is of things: people, food and the air.  We also talked about how the temperature can be read in Fahrenheit or Celsius.

The lines on the thermometer can be hard to read.

We had two cups of water to take the temperature of.

After practicing reading the thermometer in the classroom, we tested our skills outside in the garden.  We took the temperature of the air, looked in the sky for any clouds and tried to determine if there was any wind.

So Many Chicks!!!

Day two of the chicks hatching!  When I left school yesterday 13 chicks had hatched!  That is a wonderful success rate!   When I arrived at school this morning....I saw 18 chicks running around in the incubator!  It sure was crowded in there!

Over the course of the day, once the chicks feathers had dried, I moved them into our brooder!

The temperature inside the brooder is 90 degrees F.

They love to huddle next to each other when they get ready to sleep.

Food, water, heat!

They are SO soft!
Since the chicks don't have a mama hen to show them what to do, I chose a few chicks and showed them how to eat the poultry grain and drink the water.  I did this by putting the chicks head right at the food and water.  It took a few tries, but it worked!  Once one chick eats and drinks, the others follow!
They are very curious when I take pictures of them.

They peck at the dots!

Food!
I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings with the chicks!!
