Pre-K Explores Seeds!

Pre-K was curious about seeds.  Children will find something outside on their way to school and wonder what it is.  Many times it's a seed - usually from a honey locust or sycamore tree!  So we decided to investigate!

The seeds are all different colors.

The small seeds go through the screen.

I can push the seeds through.

So many seeds.

Wow!  Look how big they are!

All the different seeds we looked at.  Most of them are beans.
Everyone chose one type of seed that they wanted to plant! We all know that seeds need soil, water and sun (or in our case a grow light) to start growing!

After planting we need to water!

The stick has our name on it so we know which plant is ours!

How long will it take to grow?

Depending on the seed size, we plant about 3 or 4 seeds.

Now we wait!

A week later....look at how much our plants grew!!

Every day we need to water our plants!

Kindergarten Plants Corn Seeds and Watches them Grow!

Kindergarten has been busy investigating all parts of the tree!  We have looked at the trunk, leaves but wondered how can we look at the roots of the tree?

Well...we planted corn seeds during our gardening class...

First we made a sign for our seed...
So we will know which of the 140 plants is ours!

Then we put soil in the cup.

The cup has a hole in the bottom incase we
water our plant a little too much!

Next we added about 4 corn kernels.

Sometimes some extra seeds get dropped in!

Cover the seeds and water!
Ready to grow!

It's too cold outside, so the seeds were brought inside...

And put in the grow lab in my classroom!

Two weeks later...our corn seeds have grown!  We first drew what our plant looked like and then, carefully and gently, we pulled our corn seedling out to look at the root structure.

You can see the roots growing from the seed!

There are so many roots!

My roots are so long!

We discussed how the roots help the plant get food and stay
in one place!
Lastly, we re-planted our corn seedling and should be making their way home to continue growing in your homes!

Pre-K Explores the world of Plants!

Pre-K's enthusiasm all started in the fall when we planted apple seeds.  Nothing happened!  We discovered that new apple trees usually are grown from grafted trees and not a seed!  So we moved on....

What is this?
After reading a book by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace, we figured out that this might be the same bulb they planted in the story: a paperwhite bulb.
We drew the bulb.

We planted the bulb in pebbles.

We gave the paperwhite bulb lots of water!

We waited and waited and then....

look how tall our paperwhite bulb grew!  But....where is the white flower? Maybe this bulb wasn't healthy.

So....we decided to plant some bean seeds!!

We gave it water.

And now we have to wait and see what will happen with our bean seeds!
