First Grade Explores Solids!

We read that everything that takes up space is made up of matter: a solid, liquid or gas.  We are now exploring, comparing and describing solids.  

We wondered what we were made of....then discovered we are all three states of matter!  Animals too!

Pre-K Looks at Animal Tracks!

We have been exploring what animals and people do during the winter!  We have started to gather information during science class.

We wondered, did people wear a hat to school?

Which animals like the snow?
Which animals don't like the snow?

We made animal tracks in the snow play dough!

The snake tracks are cool!

So many animals in the snow leaving tracks!

Look!  What's under the stick?

It's our millipede that woke up from hibernating!

Kindergarten Explores Wood!

We have been making observations while looking at different types of wood by using our senses.  When we describe what the wood looks and feels like, we are learning the properties of wood.

First we gathered our 5 wood samples.

The wood feels "soft, bumpy, rough, smooth and even scratchy".

The wood smells "plain, spicy, regular, good, dusty and like cardboard."

The wood is leaning and not falling!

Balance and Motion, 2nd Grade Balances Crayfish!

We have started our new unit - Balance and Motion!  We tried different ways of balancing in the classroom.  We tried balancing on one foot, with our arms down, with our arms out, with our eyes shut.  We also tried to walk around the room balancing a cup on our head!

We tried balancing the cup upside down...

and right side up!

Balancing on one foot was tricky!

Balancing with our eyes closed was tricky!

And then, yes, we did try to balance a crayfish..made from tagboard!  First we needed to find the balancing point.

Then we used clothespins to see if that helped to balance the crayfish in new ways.  And it did!
