1st Grade and Temperature!

1st grade has started the last unit of the year: air and weather.  The have been practicing reading the temperature of water.  We wondered why most of the world reads degrees in Celsius while America reads temperature in degrees Fahrenheit.

The cup is so warm!

Look at how fast the red is moving up!

This water is colder than the water in the other cup.

The Duck Eggs Have Arrived!!

I am very excited to let everyone know that the duck eggs have arrived!  The eggs arrived from a farm in California on Tuesday.  We were supposed to have three different types of duck eggs, but thanks to a mix up at the airport, we have six different types of duck eggs: Crested, Runner, Cayuga, Welsh Harlequin, Grimaud and Duclair.

The eggs are safe and warm in the incubator with a constant temperature of 100 degrees.  Stay tuned for more exciting news about our eggs!

Kindergarten Wonders What Our Tree Looks Like Now!

It has been a while since we have looked at our tree in Lorianne's Garden.  The last time we looked at the tree, all the leaves had changed from green to yellow and brown and most of the leaves had fallen off the tree!  But now....beautiful pink flowers covered the tree!  We think it's a cherry tree!

We had lovely weather to observe and draw our tree!  We noticed that there were small green leaves hidden in with all the pink flowers!

We wonder what the tree will look like next time we visit!!

Pre-K looks at Ladybugs!

We have been looking at and learning about ladybugs!  We couldn't believe that when the ladybug comes out of it's egg it looks nothing like the parent ladybug. We made the connection that the tadpole is like that too!  It doesn't look like a frog when it's first born!

Some of the ladybugs have spots and some don't!

I saw one fly!

Look how I drew my ladybug!
After observing and drawing the ladybugs, we took them outside to release them.  We learned that they only eat aphids and aphids love to eat plants. That's why ladybugs are so good for gardens!

Look at them go!  They are so excited to be outside!

A ladybug landed on my phone!
We tried to take a picture of it....but we ended up
just taking a picture of us!

Another Fabulous Earth Day Celebration at PS 58!

What a wonderful celebration of Earth Day! We had a gorgeous afternoon to plant seedlings, release ladybugs, and enjoy the music!  In the process, we raised almost $600 to help support the Bronx Zoo's efforts to save the Malayan Tiger and over $300 for our school garden!  Thank you so much for all your help and support!

The PS58 Earth Day Pledge.

The Urban Youth Choir and their beautiful songs!

The always amazing AudraRox!

2nd Grade Investigates Rolling Spheres!

Oh the things we've rolled!  We have now moved on to rolling spheres in runways!

We discovered that for the sphere to complete a runway course,
it needs to start from up high and end low.

The spiral!

A triple runway gets tricky!
The marble is hard to contained with it's smooth surface and no edges so we put a cup at the end of the runway for the marble to roll into.

Down and around the corner!

A loop the loop!

Trying to get the spiral just right.

Down the hill, up the hill and back down again!

Creating a new trick!

Awesome!
